Recent werden we benadert door Koen Gijsman. Hij kent de Resistor via zijn opa die ons op de achtergrond heeft geholpen bij de renevatie van het Vrijplaats gebouw. Hij vroeg of wij geinteresseerd waren een optreden voor zijn improv jazz band te organiseren. Resistor kijkt graag over haar muzikale muren en heeft deze uitdaging aangenomen. Op zaterdag 4 november zullen zij een avondvullend programma op ons podium verzorgen.
Epoxy Quartet
Epoxy Quartet is een project dat wordt geleid door pianist/componist Koen Gijsman. De bandleden onderzoeken in hun muziek de overlap tussen vrije improvisatie en contemporaine klassieke compositie. Het ensemble verbindt zich aan de Nederlandse traditie van vrije improvisatie die voortkomt uit de Instant Composers Pool Orchestra en Misha Mengelberg. Epoxy Quartet zet deze traditie voort en combineert het met een lyrisch en verhalend idioom. De band biedt ruimte aan vier aanstormende jazztalenten. Ieder bandlid is een ervaren improvisator en componist in hun eigen recht. Samen vormen ze een sterke muzikale eenheid – net zoals de chemische stoffen die epoxy vormen.
Epoxy Quartet gaf een concert op North Sea Jazz Festival in 2023 en de Bucharest International Jazz Competition finale in 2022. Aan cellist Kim Jäger (Duitsland) is de prestigieuze Erasmus Jazz Prize toegekend in 2023. Kasper Rietkerk (sax) studeerde met distinctie af van de Royal Academy of Music in Londen en werd bekroond met de Craig Ball Award in 2023. Hij brengt op het moment zijn debut album KRSIX uit. Finse drummer Tuomas Ruokonen bracht zijn eerste album RuOK? uit in 2022. Koen Gijsman (piano) werd in 2023 bekroond met de Codarts Artistic Research Prize voor zijn onderzoek verbonden aan Epoxy Quartet. Hij speelde met het Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw tijdens de Conservatory Talent Award in 2021 and tourde met het Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest 2019-2021.

We were recently approached by Koen Gijsman. He knows Resistor through his grandfather, who helped us in the background during the renovation of the Vrijplaats building. He asked if we were interested in organizing a performance for his improv jazz band. Resistor is always open to musical challenges and has accepted this one. On Saturday, November 4th, they will provide a full evening program on our stage.
Epxzy Quartet
Epoxy Quartet is a project led by Dutch pianist and composer Koen Gijsman. In their music, the ensemble investigates the overlap between free improvisation and contemporary composition techniques. The band connects to the Dutch tradition of free improvisation originating from the Instant Composition Pool Orchestra and Misha Mengelberg. Gijsman’s compositions aim to forward this tradition and introduce a new musical idiom full of lyricism and narrativity. Epoxy Quartet provides space to four up and coming jazz performers that are all experienced improvisers and composers in their own right. Together they fuse to a powerful unity – just like the chemicals that produce epoxy.
Epoxy Quartet performed at North Sea Jazz Festival in 2023 and at the Bucharest International Jazz Competition finals in 2022. He performed with the Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw at the Conservatory Talent Award in 2021 and toured with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of the Netherlands 2019-2021.
